If I'm reading a message in the pane I might use the up and down arrows to scroll in the message, but I haven't noticed the need to scroll left or right, so perhaps if the left and right arrows went the the next / prev msg.
Or maybe ctrl+arrow.

I perfer to be able to move around with the keyboard as much as possible and use the mouse rarely, usually everything on the whole pc is faster with simple well layed out keyboard shortcuts.

Yes, you're not the only one to ask for keyboard short cuts.

I'd suggest 'Page Up', 'Page Down' to move through messages and Esc to leave full screen mode.

Wilson.

Page up and Page down is good, though those keys are also used to scroll up and down, sometimes it can be confusing if a key that's already a convention for something else is used alternatively.  Though ctrl+page up/down would be great as its accessable with one hand. or the  - + keys or < >

esc to close full screen would be very appropriate

also once keyboard shortcuts are in place it would be possible to hide the msg list window and still get to the next msg; provided there was a toggle switch for that pane  ;)

Or you could just use Full Screen mode.

Wilson.
