I think the default for a search is exact phrase.  I wonder whether an 'or' search is not more intuitive.  (It is to me  ;))  Example:  If I enter snakewood boil* as a search term, it will be the same as "snakewood boil*".  Personally, I would prefer if it got interpreted as "snakewood" OR "boil*".  Don't really know how others feel about that.  Where it hit me is when I did a search for snakewood (no apostrophes), then wanted to narrow the search down and simply added boil* to the search window.

Hi Rich,

This is a reaction by me against the way Outlook works. I usually either want to search for a word or a phrase, so I want to be able to just slap in

people

or

a majority of people

and not get every damn message containing 'a' !

I rarely do wildcard searches so I guess thats why I've not noticed what you mention being a problem. I take onboard what you've said though & I'm willing to hear opinions from others.

Cheers,

Wilson.

I completely understand, it boils down to personal preference.  I hardly ever do a phrase search, and am used to using quotes when I do a phrase search.  That's the way google works, and several other search engines.  So much so that I imagined it's sort of a default  :)

phrase with  " "
exclusion with  -
inclusion with  +

Most search engines use that for the basics.
Along with +"xxx xxx"  or -"xxx xxx"

that would be cool.

Perhaps a check box to always consider it a phrase, or use search 'rules'

a search limit would be nice also,  for huge groups, only search msg 3000 - 6000

I haven't managed to get all 24000 msg from the group I'm getting so I don't know how fast the search would be or if the limit would be needed.  The search speed for the 10000 is satisfyingly fast.

PGO Search supports 'AND', 'NOT' and 'OR'.

I did want to add a search limit but we ran into a problem as before version 165, PGO did not carry real dates, just the text of the date & I didn't want to offer search between two message numbers without offering search between two dates.

We are using real dates now so I will add this to the development queue.

Thanks,

Wilson.

Wilson,
I don't do phrase searchs 'by default' either.  Short term memory loss I guess. :-\

OK. I'll add an option to have a toggle which switches default from phrase search to word search.

thanks for putting the last 3 items on the wish list.

Just thought I'd bring this topic into the light again.  It's really annoying...
Every single search I ever do is for non-phrase searches, eg: "word1" AND "word2" AND "word3"  AND it's the biggest pain.  That format isn't used anywhere that I know of.  Every single standardized search engine uses a common method of searching that I already described previous in this thread.  Thoe only place you're going to find a phrase search normal is in a single text document where you're looking for a section of it rather than and entire subject.

I don't understand what that "exact match" box is for since it searches for the phrase either way.  If the "exact match" box is unchecked it should search for each with "OR" automatically with an additional "+" or "-" modifier for "AND" and "NOT".

When searching as it is now using the "word" AND "word1" does the "AND" have to be "AND" or can it be "and" ?

Adam,

OK, I think the 'Exact Match' checkbox has had its day. I will have it replaced with a 'Phrase Search' checkbox.

You can use

"little" and "machines"

or

"little" AND "machines"

in searches. I'll also see about allowing '+' & '-'.

Wilson.

Most all of my searches are PHRASE SEARCHES.  In a database of over 50,000 messages (which, by the way, is very quick to search), I don't want single words (even ANDed).

What I would like is the ability to search in the newly displayed messages (that turned up in the first search).  And, of course, to be able to limit the searches by "date"  (between two dates or after a date or before a date).

Mine too.

Totally agree. But we need to offer both possibilites.

>What I would like is the ability to search in the newly displayed messages (that turned up in the first search).

The original search criteria remain visible in the search dialogue. You just need to switch windows back to it & add more search terms.

> And, of course, to be able to limit the searches by "date"  (between two dates or after a date or before a date).

It wasn't previously possible but noe that we've added a date field it may be possible (some dates of messages remain unavailable).

It's been a while since a new version of pgoffline has been put out.  I suspect that perhaps shortly there will be a major release with lots of new features.

Just thought I'd bring this 'wish' to the top of the forum here,  ;)

just to reiterate, as google and most search engines do it,

if there are just words, they are automatically included like AND
if there are words in quotes it's counted as a phrase
if there is a - in front of a word, it's disincluded in the search

so you could search for:

scooter "arreche carb" -mikuni

for example and it would find any instance of the word 'scooter'  AND the phrase "arreche carb"  but no results would include the word 'mikuni'

thanks :)

Hi,

You can currently run this search using

scooter AND "arreche carb" NOT mikuni

PGO searches support AND, NOT, OR and phrases with "".  I think that covers all the bases according to Turing.

You're right about the lack of activity (or visible activity). We're working on a free cut down version of PGO for handheld (Pocket PC) devices and a tool to port group archives to alternative boards (in case Yahoo goes down the "pay for") route.

There actually is a new version:

Version 2.5.22
- Ability to delete messages from the internal mail client was added
- Blocking for open archive files directly was added

http://www.pgoffline.com/groupmanager/pgpatch25022.exe

but the changes are so small that I thought I'd wait till there were more before making it public but seeing as how you asked...

Cheers,

Wilson.
