Wilson ~

First, thanks for your recent assistance in helping me to get PGO back up and running after my recent computer crash and database corruption. Now I'm experiencing another problem.

Background: I am the owner of a Yahoo Group that has approximately 2700 members and almost 139,000 messages posted (although many have been deleted from Yahoo so that the actual number downloaded is slightly less).  My PC is running ME at 1.5 Ghz.

Now that I have my group archived, I have been trying to use the search function of PGO (much faster and more accurate than Yahoo's) so that I can compile similar information and post the resulting document (either a .doc or .rtf file) at the website we created to hold files that we moved from the group's files section -- it was full and we needed more room for members to upload their information).

I tried searching for messages containing information about "games" and placed the word "games" (without quotes) in both the subject and message fields then clicked on find all.  I also tried searching only one item at a time -- either by subject or by message. The search begins fine. My problem arises when PGO search gets close to the end of the database (at around message 138,000), the search "hangs". When after a few minutes of waiting, I press Ctrl-Alt-Del, the message box shows that PGO is not responding and I must end the task. Is this a bug or is it because of the size of my database?    ???

Hi Janice,

Have you got Windows XP service pack 2 installed? If so please read this:

http://www.pgoffline.com/classic.htm

otherwise? please send me a screen shot of the Microsoft error dialogue.

Thanks,

Wilson.

Hi Wilson ~

When I clicked on the link in your response, I received a "page cannot be found" browser message. BTW - I am using MSN9 as my browser, bit I also received the same message using IE. I also have Opera installed, but have not tried that link using it.

Query: If I am running Windows Me, do I need to have an XP service pack installed?

As to your request for a screen shot....

There really isn't a Windows error message. PGO starts the search and at the bottom left of the search dialog box, there is a counter. When the counter gets to somewhere around message 138000, there is a long waiting period without any further counter activity. After several minutes of no activity, I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del which brings up the Windows dialog box with all the programs that are running on your computer. (This is the screen that allows you to end a task or to shut down or hit Ctrl-Alt-Del again to reboot.) PGO is highlighted (search) and following in parentheses is the standard -- "(not responding)".  I don't know if a screen shot of this dialog box will help you. I can send it along if you'd like. LMK

Hi Janice,

Please try the link again. I have fixed some things.

Then again... if you're running Windows ME... don't bother. The error relates to the Windows XP operating system.

Now... if you're running ME then this suggests to me that your PC is...um... not brand new. This also suggests that maybe the amount of memory you have could be an issue. Typically ME systems were happy with 64Mb of memory.

When you run a search, the search result is stored in a temporary table which is cached to memory. If the size of the result table exceeds your free memory, your computer system will lock up. This does sound like what is happening.

You need to either split your group into 2 groups, do a search that results in less hits, buy more memory (256Mb + ) or get me to introduce a feature which will let you search the group limited by parameters such as date or message number.

Cheers,

Wilson.

Wilson,

I certainly vote for a "restricting" search option, it would be very good to be able to search just a message or date range.

Okay doaky. It shall be added.

Hi Wilson ~

Although I'm running Me, I have upgraded my computer - newer motherboard running at 1.5 Ghz, 256 Mb of memory (with plans to install additional memory), with the ultimate goal of upgrading to XP. Finding a mutual time to meet with my techie friend to do the work is the problem right now. I guess I'll just have to wait until I get that done.

I have been away, hence the delay in my reponse, and just tried to open PGO and got that same error message that I had previously. When I start PGO, the splash screen appears, then I get the error dialog box which says, "Error during create connection to database. Error Information: Active-X component can't create object."

We previously discussed (in private emails) that my database was probably corrupted due to a restart after my system froze while PGO was open. I followed your instructions, renaming my database and reinstalling PGO which then created a new .mdb file. I then imported the messages from the renamed file to the new file. However, I haven't used PGO in about a week or so due to my work schedule and being away, so there is no way that I would have restarted my system with PGO open. Yet, I am getting that same error message. I hate to have to keep renaming, reinstalling, and importing. Perhaps it has something to do with needing to upgrade my system as well? If you think that this is the case, then I will be patient and use this workaround until I get my system upgraded.

Thanks for all your assistance.

Hi Janice,

Apparently this error can occur if:

The Dao350.dll file is not properly registered when Microsoft Access 97 was installed.

Please issue the command RegSvr32 C:\progra~1\common~1\micros~1\dao\dao350.dll

from Start/Run

Most of the time, that usually solves the problem.  If that doesn't help, then uninstall Office,  remove DAO folder under Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft\office, and then re-instal Office 97.

If you don't have RegSvr32.exe you can get it from Microsoft, here:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/access95/util5/1/WIN98/EN-US/Regsv32a.exe

Cheers,

Wilson.
