Registration question

Since the registration seems to be based on hard drive info, what happens when said hard drive crashes for good or is put out of commission due to upgrades  Would I have to buy another license?  Basing software registration on hardware makes me nervous.  Can you tell?  Especially when I have at least four retired hard drives sitting on my closet shelf while I'm still using the systems from which they were pulled.

Thanks,
Lorraine

Lorraine,

That kind of thing bothers me also, but I can understand the need to do this.

There are programmers out there known as "crackers" and what they do is crack the registration code. They mainly focus on the big boys like adobe, but some smaller companies and individuals have been targeted also. So, if you're in Wilson's and Alex's position, this kind of thing could really hurt them in terms of sales.

I take that into consideration, and hope that Wilson and Alex keep good records (Wilson? You do do that, don't you?  :P ) so that if my hard drive crashes then I can e-mail him and tell him what happened and he can take it from there.

Hi Tammie and Lorraine,

I asked Wilson the same question (I'm retiring soon and will have to give this computer back to the company).  His answer, and the effort he and his programmer have exerted to keep this program more and more useful tells me that you (and I) have no problem.

Your main concern should be to keep a good backup of your data files.  Wilson can get you re-registered, but he can't recover your data files if you loose 'em ;D

I'd never seen a hardware based registration system before other than using a dongle (a small plug that is inserted into the printer port - very common on expensive commercial software - acts like a key).  However it makes perfect sense and makes it almost impossible (maybe completely impossible) for a hacker to break.  Certainly not worth his time anyway considering the very reasonable price of this software.

Things I gotta worry about today - loading the trailer out in the driveway because we're moving.  Taxes due April 15th.  But I'm not worried about PG O  :)

Yes, I know that. My concern is not with PGO. it's in general sense. Hypothetically, if a company uses a registration based on the hard drive's serial and then goes out of business then where does that leave folks when they get a new computer? Logic says that they should release a final version to the registered users which is not dependent on the HDD number, but what if they don't?

What I managed to completely leave out was that this seems like a really good crack proof way to ensure that PGO's users are really registered users, which is good for the developers.

I'm one step ahead in that regard:)

I was wondering who pee-pee'd in his oatmeal, myself.

Oh, cruel irony!

One of my friends just mailed me... there is a cracked version of 2.0.175 circulating on the net.

Instead of creating a keygenerator for PGO they've hacked the full install & removed the part where it checks to see if the program is registered.

Well, they'll get their comeuppance. We'll make all updates incompatible with the hacked version & when Yahoo inevitably change their service again... its Hasta la Vista baby!

Lorraine, regarding your concerns, if I go out of business I'll make the code public &  the last version password free.

If your PC burns down, you just need to install PGO on your new PC & hit the Register button. I'll know that you've already paid. And, double bonus, if you've given me permission from the group owner to archive the group on my site you can get back your data too!

Cheers,

Wilson.

Thanks for all the input.  I feel better.

Now I just have to decide which drive to install it on for the 'permanent' installation.  My original intent was to install it on the smallest drive I have since amazingly enough, it's on the computer I use the most.  I'm rethinking that just for the sake of less hassle since I've been watching drive prices lately.

Actually, I was thinking of getting two copies anyway.  I'm going to wait though until I see how I get along without it on my laptop once the trial runs out.   Anyone want to run a poll on how many days it takes??  ;-)

Lorraine,

PGO chooses the primary drive for key generation no matter where you install it so you can install it anywhere on your system.

The licence is per user so just send me both sets of registration info & I'll send you 2 codes.

Cheers,

Wilson.

Thanks!  Check's in the mail, so to speak.  No hurry on the reg numbers as I have time left.  Looks like you might be busy for a few days... years.

Congratulations!  Rachel is beautiful.  Woohoo indeed.

Lorraine,

Thanks. I have sent your codes off to you today.  I went to see my wife & daughter last night & they're both fine :)

Cheers,

Wilson.
