About Imports

Ok I'm confused about something.

Let us say I export all of the messages for my Yahoo Group to a file.

What happens if I decide to delete the group itself in Yahoo? I mean then how will I be able to import the file when there will be no online access to the group or membership to it?

Hi Hak,

 The object of the archive file is to allow you to:

1) Backup your PGO groups
2) Create a file format that you can share with other PGO users e.g.
    http://www.pgoffline.com/downloads.htm

3) Re-create your Yahoo group if there is a problem.

I have a utility which, if you send me an archive file, I can re-create your group on Yahoo.

Ok, my goal is rather to archive it for historical purposes and then close the group, rather than backing it up.

Once I have deleted the Yahoo group, will I be able to open my archive file after a new installation of PGO, where I would not have the Yahoo Group listed on the sidebar?

Its not a scenario I had considered but you can add groups manually
(Groups--> New Groups), so yes, I'd say you could delete the group & view it later from a new install of PGO.

Hi again Wilson,

I haven't finishe downloading all the messages of my group yet. It's being a lengthy process as I'm getting blocked aroun every 200 messages. So, I haven't been able to test the scenario I am talking about.

But if you have the patience, I want to clarify the scenario a bit more before trying.

If I were to follow your method of adding groups manually, would I not need a Yahoo ID that is still part of an existing group?

In other words, can I add manually a group which no longer exists for the sole purpose of being able to import the messages into the program?

Hi Hak,

You'd need a Yahoo ID to download messages from the group but not to Import it. It just has to be present in your groups list.

The way to test this is to create a group in Yahoo, post 10 messages to it, download the messages, create an archive file, delete the group in Yahoo & PGO, re-add the group manually in PGO & then Import the file.
I can see no reason why it shouldn't work.  

If you try this I'd be interested to know how you get on :)
