In an effort to make software updates easier for everyone we're moving to a new installer.

Two new options in the Help menu items relate to checking for software updates.  The menu items are called "Check for Updates" and "Configure Check for updates".

I'd like to ask for some testers of this new installer.  Please be sure to backup your data directory but the changes should not do any harm.. but you never know.

If you would like to test, please uninstall your current version then install version 4.0.808 which uses the new installer.

4.0.808:

Please post your questions and results here regarding the new installer and update process.

I uninstalled 572 and installed 808 without a problem.  Also no problem with the database.  To get updates such as 810 will we have to uninstall 808 and then reinstall it?

Updates willl uninstall the previous version during the install.

You can get the latest by clicking Help then Check for Updates.

Let me know how it goes. Thanks.

I ran the new updater and can not say it was smooth.  Got updated to 810 but it kept informing me during the update files were open and it appears it may not be closing PG Offline.  Used the task manager to close things and got the update to install.  Will watch what happens with future updates.  Also I changed the updated file location but it did not seem to change in the ini file.  I have now manually modified the ini file to point to where I want the update files to go.  Glad to see the updater downloads the full PG Offline file which I can save for future use if I have to reinstall the latest version.  The program location on my system is D:\PG Offline in case the program run location is having some impact on the updater.

Thanks Bill.  For the installer we have the option to have it auto close PG4. Perhaps the upgrade would go smoother with that option enabled.

Hi Guys,

I'm just back from holidays.

I installed 808 and declined the option to install the later version so I could try the upgrade from within PGO.

Work fine. No issues.

My only comment would be to add the menu options available via the menu option "Help" to the Help icon which currently has no options (or is inactive?).

Cheers,

Wilson.

This installer hangs when my firewall is in learning mode, which it almost always is.

The firewall detects the installer and prompts, "application is connecting outside [...details...], Allow / Block / create rule?"  Normal behavior is for the application to suspend activity and then resume once I have answered the prompt.  I answer the prompt but the installer has frozen, and I have to kill the process.

I'm pretty sure this is an accurate assessment of the cause - but not 100% sure. I did try it on three different PCs with/without firewall and with/without learning mode.  If I don't have to answer a firewall prompt, the installer proceeds as expected.

Keep up the good work.

What you're seeing is the installer checking online to see if there is a newer version of PG4. Thanks for the feedback.

Yes! I should have mentioned that I answered Allow in all those instances - because it's OK to check for the update - but still got the hang, for both the 4.0.808 and 4.0.812 installers.

So apparently for some reason the installer doesn't like to wait...

BUT just now, I tested another permutation: firewall set to "Default action if user did not respond: Allow" [instead of Block, as it was set before]. In this case, I purposely didn't answer the prompt, to see what would happen. This forced the installer to wait, also, but doing it this way, it was OK.  After the default wait time was up (30 seconds), installer got the update (4.0.814 as of today) and went to the install screen, etc.  (All this was starting with the 4.0.812 installer.)

BUT, if I go back to how I had it before, "Default action if user did not respond: Block" yet hit Allow when prompted to get the update, it again hangs.
