Title: What do I do with an .mdb?!
Post by: jeff80 on March 21, 2009, 08:05:49 AM
I'm fairly computer saavy, but I'm no PC techie. I'm running a PC with Vista. I've set up PGO, gotten my group messages as an .MDB, but I can't seem to do anything with it. I did a search for info on .mdb, and discovered it's am archaic format, no longer supported. Even found some shareware that's supposed to open it, but I just get gibberish. What can I do? I'd like to find out if PGO is any good before my trial expires (in 7 days). In the future, can you guys include either a more recent format option, or something that will open the .mdb in a readable way?

Hi Jeff,

PG Offline is a tool to download and read your Yahoo messages. It is not a site ripper. If you would like a tool just to download the messages you can use a free script called Yahoo2Mbox:

PG Offline has a well thought out reading and searching interface with many features to make managing messages from multiple groups a breeze.

.mdb is the file format used by Microsoft Access databases. If you wish to open and modify .mdb files, buy a copy of MS Access.
If your only requirement is to read the data you can download a free viewer called MDB View:

Cheers,

Wilson.

Many thanks!

I prefer to read & moderate the group online, but the messages have a great deal of sentimental value to me & the other members, and I'm promarily interrested in archiving the messages.

Hi Jeff,

If you own the group I would suggest that you first download the membership (Groups --> Get Members) before you download the messages. The reason for this is that with the members correct email addresses downloaded first, PG Offline can associate the message with the correct sender should you ever require to move to another format (e.g. PHPBB or VBulletin).

Cheers,

Wilson.
