Title: Installing on hosting server
Post by: outboundlight on October 20, 2019, 09:24:12 PM
Hello,

I'm new to this but trying to make an accessible archive for my yahoo group. Can I install the PGOffline software directly on my hosting server somehow and link it to my new forum?

Thanks

That would be nifty.

But then it would be SAAS and would you allow multiple instances?

There would be concurrent licencing issues.

But in principle, I have no objection.

Pardon my ignorance but what does SAAS stand for?

Software As A Service.

Our community just has one little Yahoo group that has been active since 2003. I am building us a Simple Machines forum, but there is no simple way to make an archive of the Yahoo group in Simple Machines. I've created a subdomain and have installed phpBB on it, so I'm hoping to eventually convert the Yahoo archive to  that.

However, in order you use your software, I have to download everything on a public computer right now...I have only an iMac and your software is only for windows. I do have a windows partition but have Windows xp on it and your software is not compatible...at least version 4 is not. I wondered if there was a way to install PGO directly onto the server, bypassing my Mac, and downloading Yahoo directly onto that.

I'm not a programmer...just a senior trying to help out our community...

OK, your best bet is:

1) Borrow an old Win 7 laptop

2) Buy an old Win 7 laptop, anything that runs Win 7 will do.

3) Buy Desktop Parallels (Windows emulator for Mac).  $6 off Ebay.

4) Buy a new laptop online with a credit card, use it for a week then send it back!

Cheers,

Wilson.

Thanks for your suggestions, Wilson!

1) Borrow an old Win 7 is currently what I'm doing...there's one in the lodge at the RV park I'm visiting. :D

2) Buying one is not an option...I have one at home (many miles from here) and surely don't want another LOL

3) I have VMware. VMware does the same as Parallels but you still need an installation and license for Windows 7...I only have XP

4) Can't see the 4th option as being very good karma!

Thanks for your awesome software and willingness to help. I will probably be getting the community to buy a license for it and install it with the archived files on the communal computer so people can look at their history and photos from there.

Windows 7 on Ebay:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Windows-7-Professional-Pro-32-64-bit-Product-Key-Win-7-Pro-License-Full-Version/163306990812?hash=item2605daecdc

$6.44

It'll come with a download of Win 7 Pro installer.

Cheers,

Wilson.

Considering that...not sure I trust that the license is actually valid...

I have downloaded the entire yahoo group files and messages using the pgoffline software. I also exported the entire message archive as an sqlite dump file, and they are also still in the PGOffline softwawre.

Right now I am able to browse through all the messages using the software, but what happens if I want to move the software and messages to another machine? Will reinstalling the program on another PC and then moving the program files to the other PC mean I can then still browse through the messages using the PGOffline software? Or do I need to do something with the sqlite dump file to be able to read the messages?

Thanks for your help!

Just install on the new machine, copy

C:\Users\<your_username>\AppData\Local\PG Offline 4\

from the old machine.

Copy it onto the new machine.

Overwrite the empty C:\Users\<your_username>\AppData\Local\PG Offline 4\ folder in the new machine.

Send me the new unique code from the new machine.

I will send you a new licence key.

Cheers,

Wilson.
