Title: question regaring mail options
Post by: ginahoy on April 06, 2004, 06:53:20 AM
Hi Wilson,
When using the option menu for the first time tonight, the program fussed at me for not having set up my mail options. I don't use pgoffline to post to groups (at least not yet) so I haven't filled out the mail option screen.

Is there any reason for the fuss? I mean, why not wait until there are actual repercussions before displaying a warning?

Also, the final warning message isn't exactly accurate, or at least, is poorly worded (ok, now I'm REALLY being picky): It tells me that the "E-mail field can't be empty", but then allows me to continue anyway ("Are you sure to continue?").  Well, I guess it _can_ be empty, after all.

(Once more, in case you missed it, that last quote reads "Are you sure to continue?")

While on this subject, since I use AOL for email, I'm not sure what to put in the SMPT Server field. Any ideas?

(please don't take my comments in the wrong way. In my former job, I did audited software on a regular basis.)

Hi David,

Yes, I agree about the mail options. I suppose you should really only get the warning the first time you try to use mail.

A good list of SMTP servers for various ISPs (including AOL) is:

http://www.net.ohio-state.edu/openrelay/smtpservers.html

However, read the caveat regarding AOL at the top of the list.

Regarding the occasional bit of dodgy English, the developer for PG Offline is a lovely fellow from the Ukraine whose English is almost but not quite perfect & a damn sight better than my Russian!
Whilst we're in the white heat of development we're fixing text bloopers on an as & when basis. This is not to say that we don't want to hear about them, au contraire. Keep up the good work!

Cheers,

Wilson.

Hi Wilson,
THANK YOU!! for the link regarding AOL SMTP servers. This may enable me to use OE for my AOL email!

If the AOL SMPT server doesn't work, this will not cause me great pain in terms of pgo, as I am in the habit of posting my messages via the group website.

Later this year, I will be bringing up a website for my business, and will be migrating my email to my own domain. And then I can finally say to AOL... "Buh Bye!"
