Title: Can't log in "Either you have the wrong username & password"
Post by: Wilson Logan on October 20, 2019, 12:36:09 PM
So, there are a couple of things that can stop a successful login to YG!

1) Have you got the latest version which is 4.0.897 ?

http://www.personalgroupware.com/groupmanager/pg-offline-4-0-897.zip

2) Check your login details !

3) Switch off Two factor authentication.

4) PGO uses Firefox. You can login to YG! using Chrome & it all looks fine but PGO sees a Firefox challenge page.

E.g. “Please verify your phone number”.

The fix is to login using Firefox, complete the challenge, log out, back in again (make sure its fixed) then start PGO.

5) In a small number of cases, your ISP has a deal with Yahoo to serve a different set of pages than PGO expects (Typically AT&T accounts: SBCglobal, Roadrunner, etc).

If this is the case you will need to create a new YG! account with a Gmail or Hotmail account and re-join all your groups.

I've been trying to get PGO working with Yahoo since I installed 4.0.887 after I had to rebuild the Windows 10 system (for other reasons) and forgot to add it.  I'm still seeing the subject problem.

I shut down the PGO app, closed out all Yahoo tabs in my Firefox Browser and also deleted all the Yahoo cookies.  I then logged in to Yahoo (using the "sign in" link on groups.yahoo.com.  I was able to successfully log in to my account.

After starting up PGO and trying to get a list of my groups, I get the login failed error.  Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I am also having trouble getting PGOffline to log into you yahoo group.  Here is the error log:
PG Offline 4.0.897
2:48:09 PM Days left for trial use - 28
2:52:34 PM Getting list of user groups
2:52:34 PM User - xxxxxx@yahoo.com
2:52:49 PM Login failed. Either you have the wrong username & password OR Yahoo is requesting that you update your current password. Please login to Yahoo groups with your browser to see if Yahoo are requesting that you update your password.

Waterfox (Firefox 56) logs into my yahoo account with no problem.  Firefox 69.03 also has no trouble logging me in.  2 level authentication is not turned on.

This is on a Windows 7 workstation with plenty of ram and hard drive space.

I even tried opening ports 3588 that PGO uses but that did not help.

Since this is the latest PGOffline and it was just installed a few days ago and no previous version has been on this machine why would it not log me in?

I am going through  Verizon as my ISP.

Thank you.

If you're technical you can switch on traffic logging which shows you the HTML that PGO is being served by YG.

If so,   go into Files -- > Options -- > Miscellaneous  and check the “Log traffic to file option” and create a file called traffic.txt in

C:\Users\<your_username>\AppData\Local\PG Offline 4\traffic.txt

Then try to do one “LIST”. Then stop PGO, rename the traffic.txt to traffic.htm  and open it in a browser.

Then you can see any errors or challenges being served back to PGO from YG.
Cheers,

Wilson.

Thank you for the help Wilson.  As you know,  the traffic.txt or traffic.html file showed that PGO is getting hit with the Verizon Oath which I refuse to accept.  I have it set to "do later" and neither version of Firefox that I currently run gets presented with that Oath screen since I had previously told them I would do it later.  When I first posted this I was running Waterfox (Firefox 56) and Firefox 69.  Now it is Firefox 70.0.1 (latest).

Is there any way to feed the "I will do it later" response back to the Oath?

Thank you.

Not without some serious dev involvement.

Given that there is a work around, namely, clear cookies & cache and then agree to the OATH challenge, I can't say that I'm keen to devote dev time to this.

We're working on porting YG to phpBB, Wordpress and non-premium Groups.io

We may get to it eventually but time is not on our side.

After not using PG Offline for about a week (I'm using the licensed version), I'm again getting the dreaded "login failed" message. I've checked and triple checked my user name and password, as well as that two-factor authentication is turned off. (Specifically, the Two-step Verification button on the Security page of my Account Info page is gray.)

Yet I can't get past the message.

I logged a List attempt, and the resulting traffic.html file shows the Yahoo Sign In page, prompting for my email address. See the attachment.

I checked for updates, and installed version 4.0.902. And get the same error message.

How can I resolve this?

Thanks!
Don

It figures. After trying for an hour or two, all of a sudden it starts working again with no new changes.

False alarm, I guess.

Very mysterious.

BTW its always worth clearing the Firefox browser cache & cookies before doing a traffic file.

Try going to the latest version

http://www.personalgroupware.com/groupmanager/pg-offline-4-0-907.zip

I doubt that will help though.

I'm still able to download but that only means I haven't been hit with the change you have....

If you open a browser and put this in as a URL what do you get?

https://login.yahoo.com/config/login?.src=fpctx&.intl=&.done=https%3A%2F%2Fgroups.yahoo.com%2F

I tried it in Chrome & Firefox and I get the Yahoo login page as expected.

One possible workaround is to get a VPN and change your region. We're testing Canada and it seems to be working. Yahoo may have made changes to their login pages that could be rolling out.

Here's a recent email I was sent by a user :

To all who have difficulty (some since the night of the 5th of December) in logging into your groups via PG Offline offline reader:
(*NOTE*: Please upgrade the software from v4.0.897 to v4.0.902 within the software first).

To Wilson Logan: Thank you once again for developing this *terrific* utility!

I found that even after upgrading to v4.0.902 I still failed to connect getting Yahoo's completely bogus notice that I entered the 'wrong' username/password combo - OR - I likely had 2-factor identification enabled (neither of which is true).

As to your Personal Groupware blog (still waiting for your acceptance of: animatedgifman agmscans.6318@twc.com (or animatedgifman.1280@gmail.com ) so I can post to the blog, please.

I wished for ALL PG Offline users to know that I had terrific success overcoming this login failure by using a VPN (I use WindScribe which accords me ~50 GBs of bandwidth at high speeds for free) and logging in on their Canada EAST location. Note: Canada WEST failed to fix the problem as did every USA VPN IP# I tried, but as I said, Yahoo! servers seemed to really like the taste of Canada East. I've been able to resume downloads of all group data from 4 1/2 dozen groups I manage (nearly 1/3 of a million members will probably be quite happy and surprised in a week or two (or maybe longer if our efforts *here* are successful!) to find I can hook them up with their archives intact! :-)

Hopefully this 'workaround' will be of benefit to the Archive Warriors who seem 'stuck' at this point.

Here are my before/after upgrade of PG Offline and trying with and without both Canada WEST (and finally Canada EAST WindScribe VPN IP #'s).

Canada WEST

Thankfully, this is a (repeatable) success (connecting with Canada EAST VPN), as here is from earlier still:
Canada EAST

I do hope this information can help whoever is still trying desperately to salvage what we can. I have a ~1/3 of a million wishing me the best ...

I'm sorry to say that it looks like I've been hit too. Cleared all cookies and cache, logged in and out, restarted the computer, updated to the newest version, even installed the VPN used by that guy in the email with various locations. Nothing.

The .htm file takes me to the standard login page, on top of my already-logged-in groups page.

I've still got quite a few groups left (not too large but a ton of them). Any chance this is something that can be fixed before the 14th?

Interestingly enough, the archives that have already downloaded work fine. No new ones will however.

Well then...just came across this article. https://www.extremetech.com/internet/303208-verizon-bans-archivists-trying-to-save-yahoo-groups-data-from-deletion (https://www.extremetech.com/internet/303208-verizon-bans-archivists-trying-to-save-yahoo-groups-data-from-deletion)

Since PG Offline is technically an offline reader program, it shouldn't be blocked. But I bet it is, since Verizon has blocked all the other scripts. TOS breach indeed...not if it was requested by the group owners!

I began to experience a similar issue at around 13:00 -8 GMT (Locale:  SF Bay Area).  At that time it appears that Yahoo Groups was down completely for a time.  While I was able to log into the Yahoo Groups website after that, I continued to receive the "Either you have the wrong username & password" error.

I successfully used the Windscribe Eastern Canada VPN later that evening.  I also tried using my local ISP / IP again and that was successful too.

What I have noticed is that download speeds for messages is significantly slower - about 30 messages every 4 minutes instead of 30 messages every minute (as it was on 12/9 and 12/10).

Hi,

I hope someone can help me. I opened PG Offline a couple of days ago only to find out I lost all my groups' messages and I had a lot. I couldn't find the file anywhere on my computer so I decided to start downloading the messages again. I was blocked after getting a few groups done.

I've read the messages here and tried to follow the suggestions but nothing is working. I tried a free VPN Windscribe but it didn't work. I am not tech-savvy so I might be missing something. I'm running out of time so any help would be appreciated.

Has anyone been able to use PGO to download Yahoo Groups using an sbcglobal.net/ATT.net-based Yahoo account?

Years ago, Yahoo partnered with AT&T to provide email and other services to customers of AT&T and its subsidiaries. Consequently, I have an sbcglobal.net Yahoo ID that uses an AT&T passthrough portal for authentication, and I get the dreaded "incorrect password"/"disable two-factor authentication" message.

Unfortunately, there is no "disable two-factor authentication" or other option on that Yahoo account's options page. Passwords are managed through the MyATT.net portal.

(BTW, I'm able to download content from other groups I belong to via non-AT&T Yahoo accounts with no problem. I'm going to see if I can become a member of the groups that I've been accessing via AT&T using a regular Yahoo account, but it may be a long shot, as the moderators seem to be AWOL.)

Yahoo have reversed their change across the UK, EU and most of the USA.

If you're still stuck try VPN'ing to Canada West.

AFAIK, the AT&T thing is a show stopper.

If you have an sbcglobal or roadrunner account you can't use PGO.

I can see how even using a new gmail account won't work if there is no one in the group who can invite you.

If you still have contact email address for other group users your only option is to ask them to do the download for you.

Sorry!

Wilson.

Message download is working for me with no VPN now, but only for groups that I've already created separate databases for. The List Groups function is nonfunctional (but I need it; I have one database per group). The List Groups function is nonfunctional with a VPN as well.

Not very tidy but here's a workaround for not being able to access the groups list: if you made a database with every group listed, duplicate it a ton of times, rename each one, and then download the messages from each one for one group. Seems to work for right now.

Ah..

Something that happened to me (a few weeks ago actually) was that all my groups disappeared from my groups list.

I had like 120.

Ok, I had quit about 80 groups but suddenly I have only 4 left and get this... the two groups that I am owner of were not in those 4 groups.

Fortunately I had a 2nd account with membership of my owned groups and a few others.

Yahoo are dropping people from groups or dropping the groups list.

Your work around is what I would have recommended.

I'm really stumped by this.

I downloaded the newest PGO, and I'm putting in my user name (the part before the @yahoo, right?), and my password. I can log in to Yahoo on both Firefox and Palemoon browsers, and I don't have two part verification set. I even tried an entirely different account, begrudgingly agreed to the 'oath' there, but nothing worked there either.

The VPN workaround is quite over my head, so I haven't tried it, and it sounded like it wasn't necessary anymore. I'd hoped not to have to jump through too many more hoops to start downloading quickly, since I'm not sure if my connection is fast enough to download everything in time. I'm feeling the pressure. As it turns out the Yahoo data is woefully incomplete, and I have to try something else.

Is there still anything I can do to make PGO work for me?

Thanks.

No, sadly it's still not letting me in. :(

Could I be doing anything else wrong? PGO is operating from an external hard drive, and I have a slightly sluggish DSL connection, but can download videos fine. I'm on Windows 7, on a laptop, simultaneously logged into Yahoo in Palemoon,...

Either you can login to a remote location (like Japan or the UK) using a VPN or you can keep trying to login from where you are.

Currently I am able to get my groups list and download messages but an hour ago I could not.

The trick is... once you get logged in, don't log out till you have all the data you want.

My workaround seems to no longer work for the moment. Managed to get all the files/photos/links downloaded for every group I was a member of last night, but the message download I set to happen overnight in five databases appears to not have worked at all. It seems the program auto-quit itself without downloading a thing sometime during the night (I have sleep etc disabled and haven't had an issue before). I do not like Yahoo's little server game.

Its like they're rotating the change around geographic locations.

Which is very clever if you want to **** PGO users up.

I can't make a solution for a change that keeps changing....

Everything is working including group listing as of 4:17am CST. However, I'm getting a strange issue. If I try to download, say, three groups in one database at once, or refresh all groups in a given database, the program seems to get caught in a feedback loop of skipping messages. Eventually it stops all groups from downloading anything and it takes two re-opens of a database before I can successfully start a group downloading again.

I managed to get a list of groups once last night, but hadn't purchased the program and received an error saying my trial had run out and that I needed to purchase.

Since purchasing, every time I've attempted to try and get a list of groups I get "13:59:33 Login failed. Either you have the wrong username & password OR you have two factor authentication switched on. In Yahoo Groups, please set two factor authentication to 'OFF'. More information can be found here: https://help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN5013.html".  I've used a VPN to try all the countries listed in this thread + Brazil and South Africa and get the same error.  I just tried running it again less than 20 minutes ago and got the error again.

Anyone been able to successfully use this program recently?

No.   Yahoo has switched the groups data display service off (and by now they've probably deleted the actual groups data).

You need to get either a PG4 archive of your group(s) to load into PGO or a Yahoo archive of the group which also can be loaded into PGO.

Cheers,

Wilson.

You would need to approach a group member who has either:

a) Downloaded the group with PGO

b) Downloaded the MBOX format archive which was offered by Yahoo for a limited period after they deleted the group data.
