Title: Manually Importing Group
Post by: GMac999 on September 01, 2016, 07:07:47 AM
I have several groups that are no longer active with no known moderator.  I have the PG Offline records for those groups and want to save them in one database.
I open PG Offline v4.868, select the group, select Group, the click on "Add New Group".
The groups window pops up and I type the name of the group I want to add in the "Group Name" box and click on the OK button.
A window pops up telling me "Please Use List Button To Add Existing Yahoo Groups"

Some are current inactive groups, but still show up in Yahoo.  Others don't even show up in Yahoo anymore.  How can I get them to add to the SQL database to import the messages, files, attachments and links?

Hi Greg,

PGO is setup to only allow downloading and importing of groups by group members.

The mechanism for this is to only allow people to add groups via the groups List function which basically checks that they are a member of the group they wish to download.

So, what happens if your group no longer exists on Yahoo?

Then you may manually add the groupname using the Group--> Add new group  function.

What stops you just manually adding any group?  PGO checks to see if the group exists on Yahoo before allowing you to add it manually.

If it exists on Yahoo and you want to add it use the List function. It doesn't matter if the group is now closed, if you were a member and the group home page can still be seen online, you can use the List function to add it.

So, to summarize:

1) Group home page still exists in Yahoo?   Use the List function.

2) Group no longer exists in Yahoo?  Use the "Add new group" function.

I hope that helps.

Cheers,

Wilson.

Greg and others who currently have this inquiry.

The answer is YES.  You can save the messages to a database.

With the PGO software, I was able to export to a CSV pipe delimited text file.  That works AWESOME.

Then using OPENOFFICE CALC (aka clone of MS-Excel) I can then import the CSV as FILE > OPEN > (pick the CSV file), a pop-up box comes up, then change the 'comma' box check to 'other' box check, then type in the keyboard pipe character that looks like this | and pick OK.

This format came in sooooo clean.   Easy to adjust, search and filter like any Excel file.  Save to ANY FORMAT you like then after.

Now, I was able to find the SPAM, Yahoo & AOL an other sponsor ads, the porn posters and the weird HTML-5 characters to remove them via the FIND/REPLACE tool.

This saved WEEKS of clean up in a matter of an hour or two.

About 1/3rd of the total content (1/3rd junk content) was removed, making the file smaller and easy to load as a PDF or HTML or Excel or ODS.

Thanks again for the ability to export a file for archiving to easily search and filter!
